Local Star Bregman Commits to LSU

Albuquerque Academy baseball star Alex Bregman is going to Lousiana State University next year — assuming, of course, that the pros don’t snatch him up first.

A junior shortstop for the Chargers, Bregman has verbally committed to LSU. He picked the Tigers over the Lobos and an assortment of powerhouses seeking his talents.

Bregman — the first high school player to win the USA Baseball Richard W. “Dick” Case Player of the Year Award — said the prospect of going professional out of high school “is always a thought in my mind” but that the current plan is to play in college.

“For right now it is (the plan), but it all depends,” he said. “It will be a family decision that my family and I decide on (later).”

Many schools expressed interest in the Albuquerque teenager, a member of the 2010 USA Baseball 16U team. Oklahoma, UCLA, Texas, Stanford and Arizona State were among those vying for his commitment.

Bregman ultimately narrowed his list to UNM and 19th-ranked LSU but said he “fell in love” with the LSU campus and the Tiger program during a recent unofficial visit.

“A lot of my friends go (to UNM), and I would’ve loved being able to play in front of my family,” said Bregman, who plays for Albuquerque Baseball Academy in the summer. “But I just thought that LSU was the best decision for me.”

The excitement surrounding LSU baseball helped make the decision easier. During Bregman’s visit, the Tigers drew a record-breaking crowd of 10,055 to Alex Box Stadium for their home opener against Wake Forest.

“It was awesome,” Bregman said. “It’s SEC baseball, you know?”
