ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Calvin Smith, the four-star recruit from Florida who spurned the likes of Alabama to sign with the University of New Mexico in February 2010, has found a home at Purdue.
Smith, a defensive tackle, played as a backup for the Lobos last season as a true freshman. He asked for and received a release from his scholarship agreement in the spring.
As one can see, Smith’s transfer is being greeted with wild enthusiasm by some Boilermaker backers. The redshirt year he didn’t get at UNM should certainly help him mature.
Yet, if Smith is as good as his high school billing, he never showed it as a Lobo. There was some sentiment within the UNM program that he’d be better off as an offensive lineman than on defense.
In any case, it surely will be interesting to see how he fares in the Big Ten.
