UNM: No Violation Involving Butts

School Says He Is Not a Recruit

No NCAA violation was committed in connection with an Illinois man’s arrest on suspicion of DWI near University Stadium Sept. 24, according to a University of New Mexico internal investigation.

“We have found no evidence that any NCAA rules related to recruiting have been violated,” Dawn Martinez, UNM’s assistant athletic director for compliance, said in a news release.

Joshua Butts, 19, was arrested while driving a car owned by members of former UNM football coach Mike Locksley’s family. According to a criminal complaint, Butts told police he had been brought from Illinois to play football and that the coach lent him his vehicle.

The UNM news release states that the vehicle in question, a blue Ford SUV, is registered to Meiko Locksley, the former coach’s son, and Kia Locksley, Mike Locksley’s wife.

Butts and Meiko Locksley played high school football together in Champaign, Ill., while Mike Locksley was offensive coordinator at the University of Illinois. The UNM investigation concludes that Butts moved to Albuquerque, was staying in Meiko Locksley’s apartment, and that Meiko Locksley — a walk-on defensive back for the Lobos — had lent Butts his vehicle.

The UNM release states that at no time did UNM recruit Butts to play football for the Lobos.

According to the release, the investigation was conducted by Martinez, senior women’s administrator Janice Ruggiero and faculty athletic representative Breda Bova. Interviews were conducted with Mike Locksley, Lobos quarterback Tarean Austin (Meiko Locksley’s roommate), Meiko Locksley and Butts.

Results of UNM’s investigation have been forwarded to athletic director Paul Krebs and to the Mountain West Conference, Martinez said.
