Calvin Smith Out at Purdue

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Former Lobos defensive tackle Calvin Smith is now a former Purdue Boilermaker, without having played a game for the Big Ten school.

Smith, the most highly sought high school recruit signed by UNM during Mike Locksley’s tenure, left New Mexico after his freshman year and eventually transferred to Purdue.

Now, after a scrape with the law in West Lafayette, Ind., he’ll have to find someplace else to play.

How his dismissal affects his Football Bowl Subdivision eligibility, I’m not sure. Smith was sitting out the current season as a transfer from UNM. After enrolling at Purdue, would he have to sit out yet another year — exhausting three of the five years on his NCAA clock, having played just one season?

I’d have the same question about Ricardo Young, the former Virginia Tech quarterback who transferred to UNM but left after coach Mike Locksley was fired.

I’m guessing an FCS school is the most likely destination for both players.
