No one ever said Mike Locksley couldn’t recruit the Maryland-Washington D.C. area. The University of New Mexico benefited from those connections during his stint as Lobos head coach — Deon Long, Lamaar Thomas, Crusoe Gongbay, et al — and would have benefited some more, had time not run out on Locksley’s 2-26 tenure.
But now that Locksley’s back on his home turf, as the University of Maryland’s offensive coordinator, the Terrapins are reaping those benefits in a big way.
On Thursday, four-star running back Wes Brown of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., announced he will attend Maryland next fall. In the Terrapins’ pursuit of Brown, it couldn’t have hurt that UNM freshman safety and Good Counsel grad Zach Dancel — so close to Brown that he refers to him as a brother — announced earlier in the week that he was transferrring to Maryland.
Now, can Locksley, Dancel and Brown persuade Good Counsel blue-chip wide receiver Stefon Diggs to join the Terrapins fold?
Forever unanswered, now, is whether Locksley — with Dancel’s help — could have persuaded Brown to attend UNM.
