The Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center are hosting a free introductory meeting for potential volunteers from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 21, at the nature center.
Those interested in becoming volunteers can learn about the upcoming training program, which includes classes from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays from Jan. 28-March 3.
Those who enter the training program will learn about the ecology of the Rio Grande Valley, including the history, impact of human activities and the restoration measures currently under way.
Trainees will learn about the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and plants of the bosque. They will also learn about the various volunteer opportunities, which run the gamut from receptionist to on-site naturalist and gardener.
The training program costs $10 plus $30 or a higher Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center membership. Participants must also have a copy of “A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of the Middle Rio Grande Bosque,” available for $21.95 in the nature center shop.
