Jeff Mills, former secondary/safeties coach at Washington, has been hired as defensive backs coach at the University of New Mexico.
With the hiring of Mills, first-year Lobos coach Bob Davie has assembled his complete coaching staff.
“We have put a staff together that I think has the potential to be a great fit for the University of New Mexico and our players,” Davie said in a news release. “We all share the vision and understand the challenge that is ahead of us.”
The staff, in addition to Mills, is:
♦ Bob DeBesse, offensive coordinator, who the past two years held the same position at Sam Houston State. DeBesse also will coach UNM’s quarterbacks.
♦ Ron West, defensive coordinator/inside linebackers. West spent the past two seasons as linebackers coach at Illinois.
♦ DeAndre Smith, running backs. Smith was UNM’s running backs coach in 2008, then worked at Illinois the past two years.
♦ Jason Lenzmeier, offensive line. Lenzmeier, an All-Mountain West offensive tackle for the Lobos in 2003, coached at UNM from 2006-08 before moving to New Mexico State, where he coached the past two seasons.
♦ Derek Warehime, tight ends. Warehime comes from Sam Houston State, where he coached the offensive line.
♦ Taylor Stubblefield, wide receivers. Stubblefield, who set NCAA receiving records as a player at Purdue, most recently coached at Central Michigan. DeBesse was his position coach at Purdue.
♦ Coleman Hutzler, outside linebackers. Hutzler has coached at the University of San Diego, Stanford and Florida.
♦ Archie McDaniel, defensive line. McDaniel coached defensive tackles at Tulsa last season.
Davie also has hired a strength-and-conditioning coach, Ben Hilgart, and a director of football operations, Brian Despain. Hilgart comes to UNM from Arizona State, Despain from Texas A&M.
Davie had withheld comment until his entire staff was assembled. But the hiring of everyone except Mills had previously been confirmed through news reports or the assistants’ previous schools.
Mills, a 1998 Western Washington graduate, has coached at Idaho, Nevada and Youngstown State, as well as Washington.
He was let go by Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian, along with defensive coordinator Nick Holt, after the Huskies gave up 67 points and 777 yards of total offense to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.
