ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — This move to the University of New Mexico is working out well for football assistant coach Jeff Mills. He just got here last month, and already he’s been promoted.
UNM on Wednesday announced that Mills, who was hired to be the defensive backs coach, will be head coach Bob Davie’s defensive coordinator.
“Over the past month, it became clear to me that Jeff Mills has all the qualities I am looking for” to assume that role, Davie said in a statement released by UNM.
Mills is getting the opportunity, of course, because Ron West left one week after being introduced as UNM’s defensive coordinator to take a similar role at Arizona State.
Mills will continue to coach the secondary.
Meanwhile, Davie hired Kevin Cosgrove as inside linebackers coach, the position West was going to coach. Cosgrove spent last year as defensive coordinator at Akron. He previously has headed the defenses at Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota.
Former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez called Cosgrove “one of the very best recruiters I’ve ever been around. In our time at Wisconsin he got five or six NFL linebackers out of his recruiting area. He is truly a player’s coach.”
