The Kings, Too

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In my column of Thursday morning (3/8), I wrote about second-generation connections at the state basketball tournament — in particular, the sons of former Lobos.

Well, I missed one. Matt King, the son of former Lobos guard Pat King ((1971-75), on Wednesday coached the Clovis Wildcats to a stunning upset of top-seeded Las Cruces in a Class 5A quarterfinal.

Matt King also was a Lobo — a walk-on for coach Fran Fraschilla in 2000-01. Pat King was a small but tough point guard, recruited out of southern California, who was a key backup on coach Norm Ellenberger’s 1973-74 Western Athletic Conference championship team.

As a senior in ’75-76, Pat King averaged 10.9 points and 4.3 assists per game.

Thanks to Gary Spitzberg, longtime college and high school statistician, for the heads up.
