UNM Going With Synthetic Turf

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The University of New Mexico is planning to replace the grass field at University Stadium with a synthetic surface, athletic director Paul Krebs said Thursday morning.

Krebs said it’s hoped that this can be done in time for the upcoming football season, but added there are some obstacles that must be overcome. At the latest he said, the synthetic field would be installed for the 2013 season.

Money for the synthetic turf, Krebs said, is not one of those obstacles. The university has money from the state, he said — severance-tax bonds, etc. — for the purpose of improvements to the field.

The university has RFPs (requests for proposal) out to a number of companies that manufacture and install artificial playing surfaces, Krebs said. The cost is indefinite, but he estimated it would be in the range of $1 million.

Look for details in Friday’s Journal.
