ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico men’s basketball associate head coach Craig Neal told the Journal he is expecting to hear a decision about the Colorado State head coaching vacancy tonight (Tuesday) by 9 p.m., and added, “I feel real good about my chances.”
Neal went to Colorado for a second interview on Tuesday. Minutes before the start of the UNM men’s basketball banquet in Albuquerque, he said, “the interview went great. I feel real good about my chances, but I won’t know until later tonight.”
Neal said he was told Colorado State would announce its head coach at a press conference on Thursday.
The news came shortly after it was announced that New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies had withdrawn his name from consideration at Colorado State. The Journal has learned that he will agree to an amended contract to remain at NMSU.
“I am pleased to hear that coach Menzies has withdrawn his name as a candidate for the Colorado State job,” athletic director McKinley Boston said in a statement. “Based on the continued success of our program and the academic success of our student-athletes, I will start the process of sitting down with coach Menzies to review his current contract.”
Others said to be in consideration for the job were former Oregon coach Ernie Kent, current Southern Mississippi coach Larry Eustachy and CSU interim coach Craig Smith.
