ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Quarterback Dustin Walton is leaving the University of New Mexico football program.
Walton, a 6-3, 216-pound redshirt freshman from Raton, confirmed Internet and television reports of his departure via Twitter and Facebook.
His exit leaves UNM with three quarterbacks, senior B.R. Holbrook, true freshman Cole Gautsche and junior David Vega, entering the fall.
Gautsche, an all-state player at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, is the only quarterback the Lobos signed in February’s first recruiting class under first-year head coach Bob Davie. Vega, a former Roswell Goddard and New Mexico Military Institute star, is a walk-on.
