Breaking: Academy's Bregman Cleared To Play

........................................................................................................................................................................................

He’s back.
After a two-month stint on the disabled list with a broken finger, Albuquerque Academy shortstop Alex Bregman is expected in the Chargers’ lineup on Thursday for the second week of the Class 4A state baseball tournament.
“Just like anyone else, I’m available to play,” Bregman said in an interview with the Journal just prior to a batting practice session Wednesday.
“I feel 100 percent,” Bregman said.
He broke the middle finger on his (right) throwing hand when fielding a ground ball before a March 12 game against Manzano. He played that day, then had X-rays when the break was revealed.
He had played in six games before the injury, hitting two home runs. He’s watched the rest of the season from the Academy dugout.
“It’s been tough,” said Bregman, who has signed to play with LSU but is expected to be a high-round selection in next month’s amateur draft. And his return will certainly coincide with a flurry of scouts in attendance today when the Chargers play Farmington at 2:30 p.m. in the 4A quarterfinals at Eldorado.
“I really don’t care about the scouts,” Bregman said. “I care about winning a state championship.”
Bregman had a pin removed from the finger nearly three weeks ago and resumed baseball-related activities last week. On Tuesday, he was medically cleared to play.
“That’s a game-time decision,” Academy coach Josue Ayala said on Wednesday when asked if Bregman would be in the starting lineup. “We’ll let him work out (today) and we’ll see tomorrow.”
If Bregman does play, it is possible he may be somewhere besides shortstop — perhaps in the outfield. That may be done as a preventive measure and reduce the chances of a re-injury. It was a bad hop on March 12 that caused the initial break.
