Notah Begay III has lived in the Dallas area for the past few years, but he’ still making an impact in his native New Mexico.
Begay will host the inaugural NB3 Foundation golf tournament July 24 at Las Campanas Golf Course in Santa Fe.
There will be a luncheon prior to the event, and a cocktail reception and awards ceremony hosted by Begay after the tournament.
Proceeds go to the NB3 Foundation, which Begay started to help reduce childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes, and to promote the leadership development of Native American children though sports and health and wellness programs.
“I’m really excited to be hosting a golf tournament here in New Mexico that benefits the work of the NB3 Foundation,” Begay said.
The entry fee is $250 per person or $1,000 per four-person team for the scramble event. The price includes greens fees, cart, lunch and post-tournament party.
⋄ In addition, Begay’s foundation has a partnership with the PGA of America, and chose two New Mexico youngsters — Shannelle Tafoya (Santo Domingo Pueblo) and Antonio Louis Larez (Navajo) — to participate at the 2012 Ryder Cup Junior Golf Academy, July 1-8 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The PGA of America is picking up all costs for the two.
There will be 82 other juniors from throughout the country participating in the event.
The academy emphasizes a variety of skills, including playing and competing in both stroke- and match-play formats, swing mechanics and competitive course management, and fitness and physical assessments.
⋄ One more item on the Begay radar is his newest venture — KivaSun Foods (kivasunfoods.com). It’s a Native American-owned company that is centered around natural, healthy products that are inspired by traditional practices that tribes have been using for centuries.
The line includes bison, salmon and turkey burgers. The bison burgers are on the shelves at all three Albuquerque Costco stores.
