ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico Lobos will play a nonconference football game at Texas A&M in 2013, UNM senior associate athletic director Tim Cass confirmed on Thursday.
ESPN.com reported on Tuesday that UNM will play A&M at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, on Nov. 16 of next year.
There is no return game scheduled. Cass confirmed ESPN’s report that UNM will receive $1 million for its visit to College Station.
Cass said a spot on the Lobos’ 2013 schedule opened up when a nonconference game with San Jose State became a league game. The Spartans will join the Mountain West Conference next fall.
It’s highly unusual for UNM to play a nonconference game so late in a season, but Cass said Nov. 16 is the only date that was satisfactory to both schools.
New Mexico and Texas A&M played a home-and-home series in 2008-09. The Lobos lost 28-22 at home in ’08 and lost 41-6 at Kyle Field in the 2009 season opener. The Lobos are 0-3 all-time against A&M.
