Though the New Mexico Lobos’ football practice on Saturday was billed as a scrimmage, coach Bob Davie did not have his defense tackle to the ground — a concession to a mounting list of injuries. Regardless, Davie called it a highly productive session and said he liked his team’s energy and focus.

Junior-college transfer quarterback Quinton McCown had an excellent practice, Davie said.

Check out Sunday’s Journal for a story on sophomore Jamal Merritt, likely to be the Lobos’ starting strong safety when they open the season against Southern on Sept. 1.
