More than $1 million worth of drugs hauled in since last weekend.

In just one 24-hour period this week, Border Patrol agents in southern New Mexico seized 800 pounds of marijuana valued at nearly $660,000, and over the weekend agents working at the Border Patrol checkpoint north of Las Cruces hauled in some 500 pounds of drugs valued at $400,000 in two separate seizures, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported today in its online police briefs.

On Tuesday, agents working at the traffic checkpoint on Interstate 25 north of Las Cruces seized 444 pounds of marijuana in three separate incidents, including two involving compartments placed in gas tanks and a third in a false compartment in the back of a pickup truck, the Sun-News reported.

Then on the same day, agents from Lordsburg on patrol in the desert south of Animas followed footprints that led from Mexico northward into the United States and discovered five burlap backpacks filled with 381 pounds of marijuana, according to the Sun-News.

Earlier this week, the Sun-News reported drug busts by local law enforcement officers in and around Hatch netting more than $600,000 worth of drugs in a three-day period.
