ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Powered by two dominating performances leading his Lobos to a 2-0 start in Mountain West Conference play, New Mexico sophomore center Alex Kirk was named the league’s co-Player of the Week on Monday along with San Diego State junior Jamaal Franklin.
Kirk averaged 21 points, 11.5 rebounds (nine of them coming on the offensive boards), 1.5 blocks and shot 57.7 percent from the floor in home wins over then-No. 24 UNLV and Fresno State.
This is the second Mountain West POW award this season for Kirk, who also earned it Dec. 31 coming off his performance in UNM’s win at then-No. 8 Cincinnati.
Franklin also had a strong week in a pair of league wins for the Aztecs, averaging 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds (four offensive), 1.5 blocks and he shot 35.1 percent from the floor.
This is the first weekly honor this season for Franklin, the defending MWC Player of the Year.
