Report: UNM RB Coach Smith Leaving

........................................................................................................................................................................................

University of New Mexico running backs coach DeAndre Smith is leaving for Syracuse, according to coachingsearch. com — a report confirmed by the Las Vegas Sun through Smith’s son, Ryan — a wide receiver who last month committed to join his dad at UNM.

That’s highly unlikely to happen now. The younger Smith told Ray Brewer of the Sun that he’s visiting Duke this weekend.

Meanwhile, espn.com reports that offensive lineman Reid Najvar of Klein Oak High School in Spring, Texas, has changed his mind and will not attend UNM. Navjar told the website that he has accepted an offer to play for Kansas State.

As recently as Monday, Najvar tweeted that he’d had a great home visit from his new coach, UNM’s Bob Davie. Then, things changed.

Davie got some good news earlier this week when dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jordan II of Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas, announced via Twitter his commitment to UNM.

More good news from a Lobo standpoint: sophomore cornerback Devonta Tabannah, who twice was suspended by Davie last fall, has been reinstated. Regarding walk-on quarterback David Vega, suspended after his arrest in August on charges of unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor and attempting to conceal his idenity, there is no change in his status. His court case is still pending.
