RIO RANCHO — Jaden Ortiz only had two points for the Sandia girls basketball team on Tuesday night, but they were the most important two.
Ortiz’s offensive rebound and putback with 1:46 remaining put the Matadors ahead for good, and Sandia’s defense held Cleveland scoreless over the final 2:09 for a 53-47 nondistrict victory.
Ortiz rebounded a 3-pointer by teammate Astrea Reed.
“We’re trying to get her to play a little more physical,” Sandia coach Susan Kubala said of Ortiz. “She’s a big kid; she played football in YAFL.”
That basket helped the Matadors (11-4) avoid having to discuss blowing an 11-point lead in the second half.
Sandia led 43-32 late in the third quarter, but the Storm (7-11) turned the defensive screws on the Matadors in the fourth quarter, and Karlie Peck’s layup with 2:09 to go made it 47-46 Storm.
“We’ve played up and down at times,” Kubala said. “We’re a very youthful team. At times we look composed and together, and all of a sudden, we look … extra nervous.”
Reed’s 20 points led all scorers.
Peck and Natalie Medina each had 11 points for the Storm.
