BREAKING: Lobos Top Colorado State, Move to 4-0 in League

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Tony Snell scored 23 points Wednesday night and the No. 15 New Mexico Lobos held off a furious rally and overcame a dominating rebounding effort by Colorado State in a 66-61 men’s basketball win over the visiting Rams.

The win pushed UNM’s record to 17-2 and 4-0 in the Mountain West, giving the league-leading Lobos a full two-game advantage in the conference standings.

CSU (15-4, 2-2) entered the game with a national-leading plus-13.8 rebounding margin, out-rebounded UNM 42-28, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds. But the Lobos held CSU to just 13 second-chance points on those 15 offensive rebounds and did what they’ve done all season: gain a huge advantage at the free throw line. UNM hit 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) from the charity stripe, including two by Snell with 7.1 seconds remaining to ice the game.

UNM’s attacking game not only got them to the free throw line, it put the senior-laden Rams in foul trouble.

The Lobos took a 22-point lead at 54-32 with 11:56 remaining in the game, but the Rams charged back, cutting the lead to 59-52 on a Dorian Green 3-pointer with 3:55 left.

A pair of Colton Iverson free throws with 40.7 seconds left pulled CSU within six at 62-56 and a Wes Eikmeier trey with 8.2 seconds remaining cut the lead to 64-61 before Snell’s clinching free throws settled the sellout crowd of 15,411 in the Pit.

Snell led all scorers with 14 points at the half, and UNM closed the half out on a 12-3 run to lead 35-25 at the half. The Rams led on the boards 23-15 in the first half with 10 offensive boards.
