THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS
Cibola’s girls and Valley’s boys were the big winners this week. At least, it was that way before Thursday night.
Both started Thursday with two-game leads in their districts. Then Valley was upset Thursday, 60-50 by West Mesa, and the Vikings’ lead in District 5-5A shrunk to a single game over West Mesa and Albuquerque High. Cibola’s girls began Friday with a two-game edge in 1-5A.
Two items rank pretty high on the bizarre scale this week.
– The first occurred Tuesday at Valley, where an AHS family member took Bulldogs guard Marcus Mitchell off the bench and out of the gym — while the game was in progress. Mitchell, a transfer from Highland, is no longer with the team, AHS coach Ron Garcia confirmed.
– The second incident, on Friday night, was even weirder. Almost supernatural. A backboard at Valencia High shattered during the C-Team game between the Jaguars and Grants. But nobody knows why.
A Valencia player was shooting a free throw, said Jags varsity coach Ezau Rios, and the backboard shattered before the ball ever got to the rim.
“It just popped,” Rios said. “Nobody touched it.”
– One other interesting note from this week: officials during Wednesday’s Eldorado-Sandia boys game took the very unusual measure of stopping the game to warn fans to cease and desist with name calling.
GAMES TO WATCH
