Albuquerque’s Solomon runs third
NEW YORK — Albuquerque’s Jarrin Solomon finished third Saturday night in the men’s 600-meter run at the Millrose Games in New York.
Solomon, a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist for Trinidad and Tobago in the 4×400 relay, ran a 600 time of 1 minute, 16.19 seconds.
The former La Cueva and UNM star finished behind Eric Sowinski (1:15.61) and Duane Solomon (1:16.04). The two Solomons are not related.
Lobo records 5-inning no-hitter
Freshman Lauren Soles earned her second collegiate win with a no-hitter against Central Michigan Sunday afternoon while the Lobos secured a 4-0 victory in 5â…” innings over the Chippewas.
It was determined prior to the start of the contest that the game would be called at 3:15 p.m. in order to allow Central Michigan time to catch its flight. It was the top of the sixth (UNM was the designated visitor) with two outs when the game was called.
In five innings pitched, Soles faced 16 batters, walked none and struck out six.
New Mexico also topped IPFW,1-0, in eight innings in its first game of the day.
Tiger joins Obama for round of golf
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — That was a big-time ringer in President Barack Obama’s golfing group Sunday in Florida.
Tiger Woods joined the president at the Floridian, a secluded yacht and golf club on the state’s Treasure Coast.
The White House says the group also included Jim Crane, the Houston businessman who owns the resort and baseball’s Houston Astros, and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
LOBO SOCCER: New Mexico midfielder Ben McKendry has been selected to the Canadian U-20 National Team. McKendry, who finished his freshman season with the Lobos last fall, and the rest of the Canadian team will look to qualify for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey this summer.
LOBO TENNIS: Michaela Bezdickova won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Laura Richardson to win at No. 1 doubles as the Lobo women defeated UTEP 4-3 on Sunday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
LOBO GOLF: In Stanford, Calif., UNM juniors Manon De Roey and Sammi Stevens tied for 10th place at the Peg Barnard Invitational. De Roey and Stevens finished at 146 (4 over) at the Stanford Golf Course. As a team, UNM finished 11th in the 13-team field at 615 (302-313, 47 over).
HORSE RACING: Trainer Bob Baffert has the favorite in the $300,000 Southwest Stakes that’s running today at Oaklawn Park. Baffert will run Super Ninety Nine (7-5).
NHRA: Courtney Force raced to victory in Funny Car at the NHRA Winternationals and defending Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown walked away from a fiery crash with only minor injuries.
