Durbin is an Academic All-American

Lobo senior garners honor for second year in a row

Caroline Durbin’s perfectionist streak can set her up for occasional surprises.

Consider Thursday morning, when Durbin was told she’d been named to the Capital One Academic All-America team for a second straight season. Durbin initially didn’t believe it.

Yes, the senior guard carries a 4.18 grade-point average and will earn a degree in business this spring. And yes, she leads the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team in scoring for a second straight season at 12.3 points per game.

But Durbin’s not easily satisfied. Because her scoring average is down from last season, she did not expect to be among the 15 players honored as Academic All-Americans.

“I am very surprised and honored to be on this list with other great student-athletes,” Durbin said. “It’s a testament to the commitment to academics put forth by our coaching staff and academic advisers. It feels great to be recognized for hard work on and off the court.”

Technically, Durbin is a second-team selection, a notch down from her first-team honors of a year ago. Still, she is only the second Lobo women’s basketball player to be named Academic All-American (Amanda Best was a third-team choice in 2011) and the first to earn multiple honors.

Durbin joins Colorado State’s Lindsay Thomas (2004, ’05) as the only Mountain West Conference women’s basketball players to be named Academic All-Americans twice.

“Caroline has set the example for the type of student-athlete we want in our program,” Lobo coach Yvonne Sanchez said.

Durbin, who plans to seek a master’s degree in professional accounting, was one of two MWC athletes honored this year. Wyoming senior Chaundra Sewell was named a third-team Academic All-American.
