Fans invited to Selection Sunday party in the Pit

........................................................................................................................................................................................

They’ve played their last home game of the season, but the New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team will make at least one more Pit appearance.

It’s on Selection Sunday, March 17. CBS will be there. And so can you.

Per the school’s website for athletics, UNM hosts a free “Pit Party” on that day from 3 to 6 p.m. for Lobo fans. Expect a pep-rally atmosphere, with little to no hand-wringing. After all, the suspense won’t be about whether the 26-4, 12th-ranked, regular-season Mountain West Conference champion Lobos are an NCAA Tournament team. It’s about how high a seed they will receive — and whom and where they will play in the NCAA Tournament.

Parking is free, the concession stands will be open, and UNM coach Steve Alford has challenged Lobo fans to show up en masse. With CBS in the house, “we also want to show the nation that New Mexico basketball gets more fans for a Selection Show than most teams get for a game,” Alford was quoted as saying on the website. “We don’t want any other team on that board to have more fans than we do for the live telecast.”

The Pit doors will open at 3 p.m., and “The NCAA Selection Show” will air between 4 and 5 p.m., the school’s website says. The big screens and monitors throughout the venue will have the show on, and if CBS follows its typical practice, its cameras will train on the Lobos when their name is called on the bracket.

The Lobo spirit squads and band will attend. The Lobo Den Store will be open.

And while the party is going to be down in the lower bowl, suite-holders can use their suites by contacting Joe McLean with the Lobo Club at joe.mclean@unmfund.org or 925-5017.
