It can’t be said that Freddy Young had a great career as a University of New Mexico football player. He never made all-conference. He started just 17 games in four years. As a junior, he was beaten out of his starting job at free safety five games into the season by a true freshman.
Yet, after a solid senior year and an eye-catching performance earlier this spring at UNM’s Pro Day, there’s talk that the former Mayfield star might hear his named called during the upcoming NFL draft.
Young’s athletic ability is beyond question, as his Pro Day numbers illustrate, and he certainly has the bloodlines. His father, Fredd, was an all-time great at New Mexico State and went on to play in four Pro Bowls as a linebacker and a special-teams standout during a seven-year NFL career.
Draft pick or no draft pick, there seems no doubt he’ll be in an NFL camp come July.
The rest is up to Freddy.
