ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico Lobos have come in at No. 88 on the Orlando Sentinel’s preseason College Football Countdown of NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams. That’s up 32 spots from last year, when the Sentinel ranked the Lobos 120th and last.
For whatever it’s worth, the Sentinel ranks UNM higher than six of its 12 opponents (New Mexico State, UNLV, UTEP, Texas-San Antonio, Wyoming, Colorado State) this fall.
Earlier, USA Today was a bit less generous to the Lobos, ranking them 108th of 125. There are five new full-fledged FBS teams this fall, including Texas-San Antonio, against whom UNM opens its season at University Stadium on Aug. 31.
