ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — First-year Utah State football coach Matt Wells had two stints as an assistant at New Mexico — 2007-8 under Rocky Long and 2010 under Mike Locksley. But it’s hard to imagine his familiarity with Lobo football will help him much when the Aggies and the Lobos meet in Albuquerque on Oct. 19, since UNM coach Bob Davie’s schemes and philosophies bear little if any resemblance to Long’s or Locksley’s.
In any case, it’s nostalgic for some of us to see the Utags and the Lobos in the same conference again. That hadn’t been the case since 1961, the UNM left the Skyline Conference (which dissolved, leaving Utah State as in independent). for the newly formed Western Athletic Conference.
