UNM raises ticket prices

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The University of New Mexico has already said it is seeking a company or family willing to buy the naming rights for University Arena to help cover the costs of the $60 million Pit renovation.

Now it is going to ticketholders directly.

The university announced Friday it is adding a $1 surcharge per ticket to the cost of Lobo men’s basketball season tickets for the 2013-14 season.

Season ticket prices will go up $17 – $1 per ticket. The surcharge will go specifically to payment of UNM’s debt service for the refurbishing of the Pit, the school said in a news release late Friday.

Single-game tickets will have a $2 surcharge, which will also go to the debt service.

“The Pit has always served as a tremendous home-court advantage, as evidenced by winning 28 of our last 30 games there,” UNM athletic director Paul Krebs said in the release. “The surcharge will go strictly to pay off the bill for our debt service on the Pit from our renovation.”

Season tickets now start at $285 per seat for adults ($161 for youths) with no Lobo Club donation. Individual tickets will start at $19 for adults, up to $100 for club seats.

The men’s basketball program averaged 15,022 fans a game last season, including sellouts in six of its final 10 games.

The Lobos are one of three NCAA teams (along with Gonzaga and Kansas) to have won four conference titles in the last five years. UNM is attempting to be the first Mountain West team to win back-to-back-to-back regular season and tournament titles.

The 2013-14 schedule has not officially been released, although some home opponents are known. Big South champion Charleston Southern will visit the Pit in November, and December will see NCAA teams New Mexico State and Cincinnati on the new Bob King Court floor Also, new Division I program Grand Canyon, with former Lobo Demetrius Walker (and coached by former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle), will visit.

UNM will play nine conference games at the Pit.

Lobo basketball has finished in the top 25 in attendance in each of the past 47 years, or every year of the Pit’s grand existence.

Faculty and staff season tickets can be purchased for as low as $144.50 per seat.
