Jimmy Gnecco always knew there would be a revolving list of musicians when he began his rock band Ours.

That’s also the reason he thinks the band has lasted since its inception in 1990.

“Times change and we change along with it,” he explains via phone while driving to San Francisco. “If the band kept making the same music over and over, it would become very boring. This was always the plan. It needed to be shaken up.”

Gnecco is the mastermind and only constant in Ours. The band has released several albums and its latest, “Ballet the Boxer I,” is slated to be a two-part series.

Ours recently opened for Peter Murphy before the band headed out on its own headlining tour this month.

While writing “Ballet for Boxer I,” Gnecco would retreat from the other band members and obsess over his writing.

“It’s something that I’ve always done,” he says. “I’m such a perfectionist when it comes to music that I revise over and over. But with this process, I was able to obsess, get it straight and then take it to the band. From that point, we’d work on it together and it worked out great.”

Another task was editing down each track. Gnecco is known for epic songs which come close to a 10-minute mark.

“I like long songs and I like complicated songs,” he says. “But I also like when you can say a lot in a short period of time. I’m blown away at how people can put so much greatness into a piece of song.

“We made the decision to be more direct with both the music and the sound of it, while still inspiring some deep thought.”

Gnecco says the new album has restored his love for music and touring.

“It used to be about fighting for your life rather than playing music,” he explains. “I’m enjoying touring again and it’s because we aren’t compromising anything. We’re choosing really good tours instead of going out with just anyone. It’s become a lot more fun.”
