ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center has been on lockdown since early Friday and has asked police and sheriff’s deputies to issue citations for petty misdemeanors to avoid a bottleneck at booking.
The lockdown does not have anything to do with crowding at the jail, said MDC chief Ramon Rustin. However, he declined to say what it was to avoid word getting to inmates.
“I don’t need the inmates to be aware of it,” Rustin said.
Police and Sheriff’s Office spokesmen both said they were told to reduce arrests because the jail was doing some sort of “inmate movement.”
APD spokesman Simon Drobik said police are going to issue citations, rather than make arrests, for the majority of petty misdemeanors until the lockdown is lifted, this morning. The lockdown went into place at 5 a.m. Friday.
