In the art world, it’s difficult to stand out.

That’s why Robert Beals is making strides in taking art out of the gallery and into hotels.

Beals is co-owner of Beals & Abbate Fine Art in Santa Fe. For just over a year, Beals has been working with local hotels to get art into their buildings – and it’s been a success.

About a year ago, Beals pitched to the Eldorado Hotel in downtown Santa Fe to decorate the newly renovated Agave Lounge.

“Anthony (Abbate) had a series on agave and it fit the theme of the lounge,” he says. “This was my first pitch and it was successful.”

Soon Beals was outfitting the gallery space in the Eldorado Hotel with various artists.

The move has proved lucrative and the gallery now sponsors various events at the hotel.

“The idea behind this was not only to make this place beautiful,” he says. “But it was an outlet to bring the community together in one place to enjoy art and culture.”

Currently Beals & Abbate sponsors art chats – which give art lovers a chance to meet an artist and learn about their art, all while having wine and hors d’oeuvres. The next art chats happen at 8 tonight, 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Eldorado Hotel.

The second type of event is an artist gourmet dinner, which features local wineries and a gourmet menu.

“The chef will work with the artist to come up with items inspired by the art,” he says. “The patrons also get a chance to meet the artist.”

And a third type of event is called the “art and city lights” event which is held in the Presidential Suite at the Eldorado. The event also features a guest DJ and food.

Proceeds from many of the events go to the New Mexico Cancer Foundation.

Along with working with the Eldorado, Beals also works with The Four Seasons, Inn of Loretto and the Inn of the Anasazi. He has also started to team with Hotel Andaluz in the Duke City for some events.

Beals also has been working with local artists for Indian Market, the gallery is co-sponsoring an indigenous street fine art project by Vanessa Wilde and will feature Gabrielle Scrimshaw. The mural will be placed on the east wall of Giacobbe-Fritz Fine Art in Santa Fe.

“These are projects that bring art out into the community,” he says. “It’s more than just street art. It has a message and is there to start conversations.”
