APD searches for purse thief

Albuquerque police detectives are asking for help in finding a persistent, and determined, purse thief.

The same thief is suspected of taking three purses at city gas stations, all within one day last April, according to spokeswoman Tasia Martinez.

Detectives say the thefts took place on April 26 between 7:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. The thefts occurred at the Valero Gas Station, at 2900 Bridge SW, the Smith’s Gas Station at 111 Coors NW, and a third station at 141 98th Street SW.

In all three thefts, the suspect either opened an unlocked door or smashed the window of an unattended vehicle. In one of the crimes, the suspect got into a physical fight with the purse owner, Martinez said in an email.

In another theft, the suspect is seen in a video surveillance tape stealing a purse and driving a green/silver van.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-STOP OR 242-COPS.
