Police shoot at stolen postal van

SANTA FE, N.M. — A Taos Pueblo officer fired several shots Wednesday morning at a postal van that had been stolen earlier from a gas station in Española.

The driver of the van wasn’t hurt and was taken into custody, according to an FBI news release.

According to the FBI, the van was stolen for a U.S. Postal Service contractor about 7:30 a.m.

Officers from the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office, the New Mexico State Police and the Taos County Sheriffs Office tried to stop the van after it was reported stolen and headed north from Española.

The FBI release says that Taos Pueblo officers reported that the van ran a barrier on Upper Rio Lucero Road and side-swiped a patrol vehicle before going into a ditch beside the road.

An officer fired at the van. The shooting took place about 8 a.m.

The identities of the officer and the driver were not released. No officers were hurt.
