Some predictions while hoping Texas-San Antonio’s Roadrunners don’t make Wile E. Coyotes out of the Lobos:
TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO: The Roadrunners were once voted as having one of the 10 ugliest helmet designs in the country by lostlettermen.com. So UTSA dumped its bird for a drawing of the state of Texas. I wonder what lostlettermen thought of UNM’s Lobo of a couple of years ago that looked like a skunk. Time to bring back the menacing Lobo of the 1970s.
Prediction: Lobos 24-20.
AT UTEP: The Sun Bowl stadium is celebrating its 50th season. It sat 30,000 fans in 1963, about 21,000 fewer than it does now. Note – there are at least five free parking lots around the Sun Bowl.
Prediction: Miners 23-21.
AT PITTSBURGH: Ten players have left the Panthers since the end of last season. Six transferred, one was dismissed, two were suspended and one left to pursue autographs from Johnny Manziel.
Prediction: Panthers 34-24.
UNLV: The Rebels have lost 22 straight on the road, but their closest game in that stretch was a 21-14 loss at UNM in 2011. They embarrassed the Lobos in Vegas last year. They’ve got to be feeling good about this one. But …
Prediction: Lobos 31-20.
NEW MEXICO STATE: The Aggies dumped their plain helmets for a scarier version, complete with Pistol Pete. A scary Pistol offense would be better.
Prediction: Lobos 28-20.
AT WYOMING: Former Cowboy Jim Kiick later became a private investigator. Wyoming may hire him to find a new coach if the ‘Pokes lose to UNM at home.
Prediction: Lobos 18-17.
UTAH STATE: The Chuckie Keeton for Heisman Facebook page was started two years ago. Anybody have a Cole Gautsche for Heisman site up yet?
Prediction: Aggies 33-23.
AT SAN DIEGO STATE: We return to the annual debate: Rocky Long is the greatest Lobo ever, or he’s the guy who took the money and ran.
Prediction: Aztecs 28-23.

Prediction: Falcons 27-24.
COLORADO STATE: USA Today ranks the Rams 107th and the Lobos 108th out of 125 D-I football programs.
Prediction: Lobos 108-107.
AT FRESNO STATE: In 1997, Fresno State became the first university to operate a licensed winery. It opened after three straight losing football seasons.
Prediction: Bulldogs 37-24.
AT BOISE STATE: Calvin Broadus, sometimes known as Snoop Dogg, posted photos of himself this week wearing a Boise State jersey, giving the Broncos a little “gangsta luv.”
Prediction: Broncos 38-24.
