Lobos Put UCLA In Past

Trip to Tulsa Next For No. 3 UNM

It was a marquee victory, but it was only one victory.

That’s the approach the New Mexico men’s soccer team is taking coming off last week’s impressive victory at UCLA.

The Lobos, ranked third in the national coaches poll, visit Tulsa today at 7 p.m. in the Hurricane Classic.

UNM coach Jeremy Fishbein says the 3-2 win over the then-No. 2-ranked Bruins was “pretty special for us. The satisfaction was going into that game expecting to win.”

But Fishbein doubts the win will go to his Lobos’ heads.

“We won’t get too high based on one result,” the coach said.

Tulsa is UNM’s only nonconference opponent that did not reach the 2011 NCAA Tournament. But the Golden Hurricane have been to the NCAAs six times since 2002 and opened this season with a 4-0 win over Missouri-Kansas City.

Fishbein says the Lobos will have to be especially good defensively.

“Tulsa is a very good, attacking team,” Fishbein said. “Very opportunistic.”

The Lobo coach said versatility is his team’s strength. Its pressing mentality was very much on display against the tactically sound Bruins.

“We can handle physical teams,” Fishbein said. “We can handle fast teams.”

On Sunday, New Mexico faces 20th-ranked Southern Methodist at 12:30 p.m.

“When things are good,” Fishbein says, “enjoy the moment, but prepare for the next game. We’re focusing on areas we can get better.”

UNM WOMEN: The Lobos (0-3-1) are in Austin for the Texas Invitational. They face SMU today at 3 p.m. and Texas on Sunday at noon.

Junior Liz Nare has UNM’s lone goal this season.
