ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 7-year-old first-grader took a loaded .40 caliber Glock semiautomatic pistol into his classroom at Helen Cordero Primary School on Wednesday, but it was immediately taken away from him when he mentioned it to a fellow student and teacher.
The boy was suspended for the day, and a police officer arrived at the school at 8:20 a.m. to take the gun into evidence, according to Albuquerque Public Schools spokeswoman Monica Armenta. The school sits near 98th Street and Central Avenue.
The weapon was held in the principal’s office until the officer arrived at the school, 8800 EucarizSW, near 98th Street and Central Avenue. Armenta said the boy didn’t threaten anyone with the gun. He could face a longer suspension or expulsion.
The boy carried the pistol in his backpack, and then told a fellow student and his teacher that he had a gun, Armenta said. The teacher then looked in his backpack and saw it before calling the principal.
Police are investigating how the boy obtained the gun.
