Second human plague case reported in Torrance County

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Preliminary tests show an 11-year-old Torrance County girl is the second plague victim this year both in New Mexico and the United States, state health officials said.

The illness marks the second case of human plague in Torrance County this year.

In August, the New Mexico Department of Health identified a 15-year-old Torrance County boy as the nation’s first case of human plague this year.

Plague, a bacterial disease of rodents, is generally transmitted to humans through the bites of infected fleas. It also can be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, wildlife and pets.

New Mexico had one nonfatal case of human plague in 2012.
