Three young men were rescued from the Sandias early Thursday after making a split-second decision to try to check out the TWA wreckage while they walked their dogs on the Pino Trail on the mountains’ peak.
The decision was based “only on a dim knowledge that the wreckage was somewhere under them” and “despite the high ridge in between them and the correct canyon”, according to New Mexico State Police.
The trio started bushwhacking straight to the area and got stuck in rough terrain after dark. They were wearing only jeans and T-shirts.
They called 911 at 1:16 a.m. after trying to keep warm by burning one dog’s leash and one man’s T-shirt in a fire. They were rescued by a search and rescue team, which was notified shortly after 3 a.m. and climbed up to the men around 5:30 a.m.
The men were not injured.
