Albuquerque High demonstrated neither bark nor bite Thursday night, making for one forgettable homecoming.
The Bulldogs’ losing streak reached 33 games at Milne Stadium, as Del Norte’s Knights put a royal beating on AHS, 53-0.
There was probably only one significant piece of information to come out of this – Del Norte (3-2) surpassed its win total from 2012.
“You know, for us, we’re trying to figure out the identity of our football team,” Del Norte coach Bruce Binkley said. “We’re 3-2 and we’re trying to figure out what kind of team we are.”
Well, with quarterback Tyrelle Jackson and tailback Daryl Wiggins, they’re often an exciting football team.
That duo pretty much wrecked AHS (0-4). Jackson rushed for two quick scores for the Knights, and then Wiggins took over from there.
Wiggins, in just one half of work, rushed 17 times for 279 yards and four touchdowns, covering 1, 8, 41 and 7 yards. It was possibly the most effortless 279 a running back could gain, as the Bulldogs’ defense was – again – overmatched.
Jackson had the night’s most thrilling touchdown, turning a busted play into a 16-yard TD five minutes into the game.
He also threw a short TD pass to Michael Mejia, and Mejia, the backup QB, ended the game on the first play of the fourth quarter with a 17-yard touchdown run.
The Knights outgained the Bulldogs 398-87.
“I wanted to see, do we know how to show up, compete and execute, no matter who we play?” Binkley said. “And do it in a first-class fashion?”
Albuquerque’s deepest penetration into Del Norte territory was to the Knights’ 30 – with Del Norte’s second-string defense in the game – in the third quarter.
