CLINCH RETIRING In case you missed it, the Journal reported last weekend that Albuquerque Academy girls coach Pete Clinch is retiring at season’s end. He’s been coaching at the school for nearly 20 years. CHANGE AT AHA Atrisco Heritage Academy recently fired boys head coach Rodrigo Sierra. “We made a change that was best for our school and best for our soccer program,” athletic director Adrian Ortega said. Micah Newman, an assistant last year with Jessica Villalobos – who resigned in the offseason – was teaching U.S. History at Atrisco when the school asked him to step in. GAMES TO WATCH Today: District 1-5A action gets under way. For the girls, it’s Rio Rancho at Volcano Vista at 3 p.m. and Cleveland at Cibola (APS Complex) at 4:30. Rio Rancho’s boys are home to Volcano Vista at 4 p.m., with Cibola at Cleveland at 6 p.m. Thursday: It’s a La Cueva-Eldorado doubleheader, with the boys at 4:30 and the girls at 6:30. Saturday: In 1-5A, it’ll be Rio Rancho-Cibola (boys at RRHS, girls at the complex, both at 11 a.m.) and Volcano Vista-Cleveland (boys at VVHS at 1 p.m., girls at Cleveland at 11 a.m.). LAST WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS n An own goal by Atrisco Heritage’s boys in overtime gave Albuquerque High a crucial 2-1 victory in a matchup of the top two teams in District 5-5A. The girls from Valley, AHS and West Mesa are tied for first place at 3-1 headed into today’s action. n St. Pius and Albuquerque Academy on Tuesday opened 5-4A action (boys and girls) with wins over Del Norte and Moriarty, respectively.
