An El Paso man arrested on a bus at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in southern New Mexico after agents found cocaine in a pillow he was carrying has been sentenced to 27 months in prison followed by a three-year term of supervised release, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The news release said Juan Manuel Gallegos, 19, was sentenced during a hearing Wednesday (April 27) in federal court in Las Cruces for possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

Gallegos was arrested on Aug. 18, 2010, at a Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 54 near Alamogordo, according to the news release.

The news release said that court records reflect that Gallegos admitted he was a passenger on a Los Paisanos bus that was inspected by Border Patrol agents at the checkpoint. Agents found 745 grams of cocaine concealed in a pillow Gallegos was carrying, according to the news release.

The news release said Gallegos admitted he was being paid $3,000 to transport the cocaine from El Paso to Dodge City, Kan.
