Lobos-Aggies

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Final score: Lobos 66, Aggies 17. Will update later with final stats.

Lobos 66, Aggies 17. Jhurell Pressley, playing with the Lobos’ No. 2 offense, bolts 19 yards for a touchdown with 9:07 left in the game. UNM’s 66 points ties their highest-ever output against New Mexico State (66-14 in 1982).

Lobos 59, Aggies 17. Cole Gautsche scores on an option keeper from 15 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. Lobos are seven points away from tying their most points ever scored in a game against New Mexico State.

End of third quarter: Lobos 52, Aggies 17. As the fourth quarter begins, UNM has the ball on the NMSU 16-yard line.

Lobos 52, Aggies 17. A 46-yard pass play sets up a 38-yard field goal by NMSU’s Maxwell Johnson. There’s 2:30 left in the third quarter.

Lobos 52, Aggies 14. Cole Gautsche hits Carlos Wiggins with a 33-yard touchdown pass. There’s 9:08 left in the third quarter.

Lobos 45, Aggies 14. After UNM recovered an NMSU fumble at the Aggies 18-yard line, Justus Adams kicks a 33-yard field goal. But the Lobos have not produced a first down on their first two possessions of the third quarter.

The third quarter is about to begin. The Lobos will receive.

Halftime stats: First downs — Lobos 12, Aggies 9. Yards rushing — Lobos 248, Aggies 89. Yards passing — Lobos 34, Aggies 149. Total offense — Lobos 282, Aggies 238.
Individual rushing: Lobos: Kasey Carrier 11 carries for 122, Cole Gautsche 8 for 95 Aggies — Brandon Betancourt 12 for 66. Passing: Lobos — Clayton Mitchem 1-for-4, 19 yards, Gautsche 1-for-1, 15 yards. Aggies — Andrew McDonald, 12-or-18, 149 yards, one interception.

Halftime: Lobos 42, Aggies 14. I’ll be back with halftime stats/superlatives/records.

Wow, having a tough time blogging and tweeting at the same time. The Lobos lead 42-14 after a three-playm 62-yard drive. Kasey Carrier got things started with a 57-yard bolt up the middle.

Lobos 35 Aggies 14. A 55-yard Andrew McDonald-to-Jerrel Brown pass highlights a 79-yard NMSU score drive. There’s 4:17 left in the second quarter. We’re told the Aggies actually have more yards from scrimmage than the Lobos do at this point.

Lobos 35, Aggies 7. Oft-injured senior running back Demarcus Rogers gets the score from 16 yards out, capping, a seven-play, 58 yard drive set up by an apparent botched Aggies fake-punt play. 7:43 left in the second quarter.

Lobos 28, Aggies 7. Lobos wide receiver Carlos Wiggins returns an NMSU kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown with 14:02 left in the second quarter. Don’t think the Aggies can rally from this.

Lobos 21, Aggies 7. New Mexico State scores on a 13-pllay, 75 yard drive.

After one quarter: Lobos 21, Aggies 0. But as the second quarter begins, NMSU will have the ball on the UNM 4-yard line after driving 71 yards in 10 plays. Former Rio R

Lobos 21, Aggies 0: After an interception and a 26-yard return by linebacker Tevin Newman, Kasey Carrier scores from 11 yards out. Newman got the start tonight in place of usual starter Rashad Rainey at sam linebacker. I’m unaware of any injury to Rainey.

Lobos 14, Aggies 0. The Aggies complete a 39-yard pass to the Lobo 35, but can’t convert a 4th down. The Lobos then drive 65 yards on nine plays for the TD. Kasey Carrier gets the score from 1 yard out, but runs by quarterback Cole Gautsche of 36 and 10 yards are the big plays. Gautsche broke several tackles on the 36-yarder. Aggie defense can’t handle him.

Lobos 7, Aggies 0. After UNM defensive end Brett Bowers gets a sack on 3rd down, the Aggies punt. The Lobos then drive 69 yards in seven plays. Kasey Carrier gets the TD from 1 yard out. Big plays in the drive: back-to-back carries of 25 yards by Carrier (great block by offensive tackle Darryl Johnson) and 16 from quarterback Cole Gautsche, both off the triple option.

And here we go …

5 minutes before kickoff, we’ve got a temperature of 61 degrees, 14-mph winds out of the north-northwest, no chance of precip. That breeze is stronger than forecast, could play a role tonight.

… Good afternoon from University Stadium in Albuquerque, where the New Mexico Lobos (1-3) and the New Mexico State Aggies (0-5) will tee it up in about an hour.
I’ll be blogging with score changes and with updates at the quarter and halftime breaks. I’ll also be tweeting at @burquerick with observations, impressions and trends as they happen.
By the way, this officially is the 105th meeting between the two teams. Prior to Saturday, the Aggies had been depriving themselves of a victory.
An NMSU news release this week listed the series at 67-31-5 in favor of the Lobos. UNM had it 67-32-5. Now, both schools agree that it’s 67-32-5.
