UNM football: Lobos vs. Aggies recap

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Flashback: The New Mexico Lobos (2-3) ran roughshod over downstate rival New Mexico State (0-6), piling up 541 yards rushing in routing the Aggies 66-17 Saturday at University Stadium.

What went right: The Lobos got big plays from all three phases: offense, defense and special teams. The defense, devastated the previous Saturday in a loss to UNLV, got three turnovers against the Aggies and made 11 stops on third or fourth down. Sophomore Carlos Wiggins had his second huge game in succession with a 100-yard touchdown kickoff return, a 33-yard TD pass reception and 57 yards on two rushes. The Aggies had no answer for Lobo quarterback Cole Gautsche, who rushed for 127 yards, hit Wiggins on the touchdown pass — another sure TD pass was dropped — and made outstanding decisions on the keep/pitch. The Lobos’ offensive line was dominant throughout, albeit against the worst rush defense in the nation.

What went wrong: Though the defense contributed some big plays, it also gave up 451 yards total offense and was victimized by pass plays of 34, 39, 46 and 55 yards. If the Aggies can get 451 yards, what might Wyoming do in Laramie this Saturday?

Injury report: Backup quarterback Clayton Mitchem suffered a back injury in the first quarter. His status for Wyoming is unknown. Outside linebacker Rashad Rainey sat out most of the NMSU game with a stiff neck. He’s expected to be OK for Wyoming.

Quoting Davie: “(New Mexico State has) had a heck of a schedule. I’ve watched all of it. I don’t know that many offenses have been able to do to them what we are able to do (Saturday). We did the same thing to UNLV a week ago, and it’s exciting. That part of it is really exciting as we go.”

Next up: The Lobos travel to Laramie, Wyo., to play the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday afternoon. Wyoming (3-2 overall, 1-0 in Mountain West play) is coming off a bye week after a disturbing 42-21 loss at Texas State on Sept. 28.
