Prep football: Academy rattles Tucumcari 55-0

........................................................................................................................................................................................

It doesn’t get much easier than it did on a leisurely Saturday afternoon for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.
Senior tailback Phillip Romero rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns on just seven touches, and the Chargers — overshadowed somewhat this year by their unbeaten rivals from St. Michael’s, but amid a tremendous season themselves —  steamrolled visiting Tucumcari 55-0.
“They really took care of business today,” Academy coach Kevin Carroll said.
Romero, who suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament in a knee in the 2012 season opener against Trinidad, Colo., causing him to miss nine games, has flourished this season.
He surpassed 1,000 yards for the season with his performance Saturday, which included touchdown runs of 20, 51 and 85 yards.
“We always would rather get pushed, but these games are necessary,” Romero said after his third 200-yard game of the season. “We’re happy with where we’re at right now.”
Academy went 8-for-8 on scoring drives, and made it look ridiculously easy against 2A’s Rattlers (1-5).
The Chargers, on homecoming, scored 49 first-half points on just 23 offensive snaps.
None of their seven first-half drives lasted longer than five plays.
The Chargers had 377 rushing yards. They didn’t punt, nor did they commit a turnover or penalty.
Tucumcari had only one chance to score. The Rattlers, however, fumbled at the Academy 2 and the Chargers recovered.
Two plays later, Romero started right, cut back to the middle, then peeled off to the far side for his 85-yard score.
Ian Russell added a pair of scoring runs for Academy.
