Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera plans to visit six schools in southern New Mexico on Wednesday.
The schools are in Dona Ana County and Skandera has scheduled sessions with the Las Cruces and Gadsden school boards.
In announcing the tour on Monday, Skandera said she will meet with superintendents, teachers, parents and students.
School districts statewide have come under greater scrutiny from the department recently as it reviews whether they’re taking unfair advantage of a school funding formula to generate more money through special education services and teacher training.
The agency announced last week that a more expansive audit is needed of nine districts, including Las Cruces.
Republican Gov. Susana Martinez is pushing for school changes, including a new system to evaluate and compensate teachers based on student performance.
