UNM basketball: Sanchez: Women won’t scrimmage at Howl

........................................................................................................................................................................................

“Meet the Lobos” will be the primary theme for coach Yvonne Sanchez’s squad at tonight’s annual Lobo Howl.

With just 45 minutes of court time (7 to 7:45 p.m.), there won’t be time for much else.

Players will sign autographs from 6 p.m. to 6:30 on the Pit’s north concourse. They’ll take the floor approximately 30 minutes later.

After introductions, the Lobos will run through full-court drills and shooting contests. Asked if her team would scrimmage, Sanchez responded in no uncertain terms.

“Never!” she said. “As long as I’m around, we won’t scrimmage at the Howl.”

Such is hardly surprising considering the unfortunate ending of Sanchez’s first Howl in 2011, when Sara Halasz suffered a season-ending knee injury during the final minute of an intrasquad scrimmage.

“I know injuries can happen anytime,” Sanchez said, “but Sara’s injury started a landslide of problems that season. No sense reliving that.”

Nor do the Lobos plan a revised version of the dance routine that concluded their segment of last year’s Howl.

“If we had a full hour, they probably would have done one,” Sanchez said, “but 45 minutes is not very long and I really just want the fans to see our team. With the new freshmen and (junior transfer) Ebony Walker eligible now, it’s so different from last year. We’re excited for the fans to see us.”
