More charges filed over Gov.’s emails

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A federal grand jury has filed two additional charges against a former member of Gov. Susana Martinez’s campaign team, alleging he lied to FBI agents about events leading to the hijacking of the Martinez campaign emails after her election.

Jamie Estrada, who served for a few months as Martinez’s campaign manager in 2009, was originally indicted in May on 12 counts of intercepting emails on the campaign account and two counts of lying to FBI agents during an interview.

Estrada, who pleaded not guilty to the original indictment, has sought to have the original indictment dismissed because it charged him with intercepting “wire” communications.

The new indictment charges him with 12 counts of intercepting “electronic communications.”

The intercepted emails were distributed by Martinez’s opponents after her election to various media outlets. She asked for a federal investigation after the emails surfaced and said she had never seen the emails sent to her by supporters and in response to some personal purchases she had made online.

Estrada is charged with hijacking the email domain name and redirecting it to another account that he controlled.
