A drunken driver reached for a gun when a Rio Rancho Police officer pulled him over after a chase recently, but the officer took control of the situation without anyone getting hurt, according to the department.

Just before 2 p.m. on Halloween, dispatchers received a report of a reckless driver on Sara Road, according to dispatch logs.

Rio Rancho Police Officer Janet Garcia said the driver initially wouldn’t pull over for officers, so they ended up conducting a felony stop. When the driver exited the car, she said, the officer noticed a gun holstered on the man’s hip.

The officer gave the man commands to lie on the ground and not reach for the gun. Garcia said the man laid down but reached for the gun.

The officer stepped on the man’s arm, she said, stopping him and taking away the gun. Police arrested the man without further incident.

Garcia said the man was highly intoxicated.

According to dispatch logs, the man was charged with DWI, negligent use of a firearm and aggravated assault on a police officer.

No other information was available at press time.
