Some Big I lanes closed, armed man on south-to-east flyover

An Albuquerque SWAT team was trying to negotiate with an armed man on the south-to-east flyover at the Big I late Friday night.

APD spokesman Daren DeAguero said the man fled the scene of an earlier crash on southbound I-25 north of the Big I, and a police officer pulled him over on the flyover.

The suspect showed the officer a gun after he was stopped, according to DeAguero, prompting police to call in a SWAT team and close the flyover and eastbound I-40 from Second Street to University Boulevard.

DeAguero said the man, who is in a Hummer sport-utility vehicle, has not yet responded to PA announcements, although he is alive.

DeAguero didn’t know whether anyone was injured in the initial hit-and-run crash.

“It’s just a waiting game right now,” DeAguero said. “We’re at a standstill, we’re not getting a response.”

DeAguero said police were trying to divert traffic away from I-25.

“He has the high ground, so we need to keep people away from that area,” he said.

9:59 p.m. – Albuquerque police are trying to talk to an armed man who is in his sport-utility vehicle on top of the southbound Interstate 25 to eastbound I-40 flyover, according to a police spokesman.

The incident, believed to be tied to an earlier hit-and-run crash, has shut down east-and south-bound lanes of the interstates.

9:32 p.m. – The state DOT reports that the Incident at the Big I, which APD is dealing with, has all southbound Interstate 25 and all eastbound Interstate 40 lanes closed.

The DOT advises that drivers follow the detours and expect delays.

8:16 p.m. – Officers are on scene at the Big I, possibly in reference to a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that was stopped there, according to an APD spokesman.

The area is temporarily close because of the investigation, police said.

APD plans to release more information when it’s available, the spokesman said.

7:44 p.m. – Every lane of southbound traffic on I-25 is at a standstill from Jefferson to Comanche due to a non-fatal vehicle crash.

Albuquerque Police did not immediately return calls for more information.
